Family Business Facilitation

Green Pastures

How does Facilitation work?

Facilitation is a process that empowers families to find their own outcomes that best suit their needs, the future of the business and the farm.

Family business meeting facilitation involves the whole family or all of those family members who are impacted by the decisions around the future direction of the business.

Facilitators are not financial or legal experts, they are not consultants or mediators, they do not offer advice. Instead, they work with the family to identify the barriers, the issues or the breakdown in communication; address the concerns and fears of individual family members; and build a mutually agreed plan of action that will in turn move the family forward with positive solutions.

Facilitators can propose and convene expert advisers whether legal or financial, to support the process, the discussion, and the outcomes. In some instances, facilitators work alongside legal and financial advisers to support the outcomes and agreed next steps from the family meeting.

Amy Fry, Coach and Facilitator. Working with family businesses to navigate transition and succession

More about the process

  • I facilitate families to openly discuss the future of the business.

  • I support each family member to share their hopes along with their concerns, in a safe environment.

  • I help raise individual and collective awareness using powerful questioning techniques to identify the barriers to making progress with transition or succession.

  • I provide a framework for families to work in harmony to ensure the future of the business.

The facilitated meeting will be confidential, impartial and will follow the terms of reference issued ahead of the meeting.
